"I dunno. Probably the same thing that happened to the birds, and the sea. Whatever it is, it's making my fur stand on end. Still want to go on?"

"Yes... of course," said Sorrou, hesitantly. She slowed down just the tiniest bit, hoping Daryl wouldn't notice.

Noting the hesitation, he said, "Don't worry, we'll be fine. Whatever it is, we've been through worse, right?"

"Hmm," said Sorrou, pondering the question. "I won't know until it happens."

"Yes. It should. But apart from us, there's no-one. No small animals, no birds, no other wolves. Not even waves or wind. And nothing that could have made that call. Either they were running away from something, or something chased them off. And whatever it was, it's probably still here."

"Maybe the call scared everything off?" suggested Sorrou, looking around for any signs of life.

"Yeah, maybe," said Daryl, still sounding tense and nervous, "But why would whatever gave the call scare everyone off, and then go away?"

"Maybe it was a warning... or a cry for help," said Sorrou quietly, looking around.
